Blacklisted Construction Workers Win Compensation

Blacklisted Construction Workers Win Compensation

About £10m will be paid in compensation to more than 250 building workers who were “blacklisted” by some of Britain’s biggest construction firms under a settlement announced on 16th May 2016.

The total payout from the out-of-court deal secured from 8 well-known building companies by the Unite union on behalf of almost 800 unfairly targeted workers could be as high as £75m.

A blacklist of more than 3000 workers is believed to have operated for 30 years and resulted in hundreds of them losing their jobs and being unable to secure new ones after being deemed troublemakers while raising legitimate workplace issues. Secret files seized by the Information Commissioner’s Office included details of worker's political views, competence, and trade union activities.

Unite said payouts under the latest settlement could range from £25,000 to £200,000 per claimant, depending on such factors as the loss of income and the seriousness of any defamation.
