Double Promotion at Leading Tees Valley Law Firm

Double Promotion at Leading Tees Valley Law Firm

A leading Darlington law firm is celebrating the promotion of two of its top lawyers to the position of partner.

Close Thornton LLP (www.close-thornton.co.uk), which operates from premises in Duke Street, has been providing private and commercial legal advice throughout the region for over 70 years.

Residential property expert Sue Alexander and commercial specialist Dermot Winters have both been promoted to partner positions.
Sue grew up in West Yorkshire and she is an English graduate who went on to study law at Leeds Metropolitan University and take her Common Professional Examination and Law Society Finals. She qualified as a solicitor in 1996.

Following experience in law firms in Nottingham, Peterlee and Darlington, Sue joined the team at Close Thornton in August 2015. Sue has been a member of Solicitors for the Elderly since 2011.

Sue is now heading up the firm’s conveyancing department and with the recent appointment of Rob Steer to that team, there are exciting plans to expand and further develop this area of the firm’s business.

Dermot Winters is a graduate of Galway University, The Institute of Bankers in Ireland and Northumbria University.

Dermot returned to the North East in 2011 after having worked for a number of years with a national corporate practice in Manchester. He joined the team at Close Thornton in 2016. In addition to provision of business legal advice, Dermot is a keen advocate of Alternate Dispute Resolution and is dual-qualified as a Commercial Mediator.

Dermot leads the very busy commercial team at Close Thornton, which in the past year has completed transactions with a value in excess of £200M.

Shaun Burke, senior partner at Close Thornton LLP said, “We are delighted that Sue and Dermot are now on board as partners. They have both been an integral part of our growth recently and we are looking forward to a bright future. We have some very exciting plans for the firm which are very heavily focused around our corporate, commercial and property departments. Sue and Dermot have excellent knowledge and expertise and they will be at the forefront as the firm continues to move forward.”

Sue added: “Since joining Close Thornton, I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the team. There is a great work ethic and it is a really good environment to be in. The team here is dedicated and positive, it is very exciting to be involved in developing the business from here.”

Dermot said: “There are so many great businesses in our region, buoyed by a fantastic entrepreneurial spirit. Close Thornton has been serving the people and businesses of Darlington and beyond for over 70 years. As one of the longest established legal practices in the North East, we are intensely committed to helping our region’s enterprises prosper and grow.”
