| GET UP TO DATE WITH MATERNAL MATTERS |

Release date: May 2005
Darlington based law firm Close Thornton Solicitors is advising that small businesses across the region get fully up to date with current laws regarding maternity leave in preparation for forthcoming changes.
The Government recently announced plans to extend mothers’ maternity leave to nine months while men could be permitted to take some of their partner's allowance.
Chris Wiper, the Senior Partner at the firm, comments: “Maternity leave can be a complex subject for businesses who try to provide employees with the leave they are entitled to, while also managing possible staff shortage implications. Companies want to do the right thing for families, but at the same time they need to run their business successfully.
“Many are not aware of the current rules let alone how the changes announced recently by the government will affect them. The whole issue can worry many owners and managers so these latest announcements are sure to cause more concern.”
Labour's parental rights bill will entitle working mothers to an extra three months' paid maternity leave. It’s also proposed that mothers will be able to transfer some of their maternity leave and pay to the child's father. The legislation could come into force by April 2007.
Mr Wiper continues: “In addition to managing the business, one of the main areas of concern for businesses and employees is how much notice parents must give regarding when they wish to return to work. This is often a cloudy area, however ensuring all parties involved know the law both now and in the future can often help overcome many of the headaches.”
