EMPLOYMENT ALERT: National minimum wage to increase

Release date: April 2003

The Government announced that in October this year the national minimum wage will rise from £4.20 to £4.50 per hour, and the youth rate for 18-21 year olds will rise from £3.60 to £3.80 per hour.

There has also been a provisional acceptance of the Low Pay Commission’s recommendations for a further increase in October 2004 to £4.85 per hour for adults and £4.10 per hour for youths.

In the pipeline is the Commission has been asked by the Government to look at the possible advantages and disadvantages of introducing a minimum wage for 16-17 year olds.
