England goes smoke-free on 1st July

From 1 July 2007, the whole of the United Kingdom will have smoke-free legislation in place, making it the biggest jurisdiction in the world (by population) to have legally-enforced protection from secondhand smoke. Virtually all workplaces will be smoke-free, including offices, shops, factories, restaurants and pubs.

It will be the responsibility of business owners to make sure that their premises meet the new requirements. They need to:

  • display 'no-smoking' signs in smoke-free premises and vehicles
  • take reasonable steps to ensure that staff, customers/members and visitors are aware that premises and vehicles are legally required to be smoke-free
  • remove any existing indoor smoking rooms
  • ensure that no one smokes in smoke-free premises or vehicles
